SCIENCE: Seminars on Creating Inclusive ENvironments in scienCE

SCIENCE: when data speak DEI

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion have been at the centre of the scientific debate in the last decade, at any stage of the academic path. The Seminars on Creating Inclusive ENvironments in ScienCE (SCIENCE) will focus on the research performed on how DEI can affect the performance of a research group, which actions have been done so far, and which outcomes were observed, in order to give students and researchers the actual tools to enter the debate.

LOGISTICS

SCIENCE events are scheduled once per quarter, afternoon Pacific Time, in the Physics Reading Room, Department of Physics and Astronomy. The SCIENCE event is divided in two sessions.

  • The first one consists of a 40-minute seminar and 20 min Q&A session, where the invited speaker presents their research on DEI in STEM.
  • The second session is a guided discussion between students and researchers on how the results may be implemented as practices to promote inclusion and accessibility in academia.
  • The seminars are in person as well as online. Participation in the discussion is only for in person attendees. The full event is shared on our YouTube channel as Live Event.

WHO CAN ATTEND

While the seminars are organized within the Department of Physics, every student and faculty member and staff within UCR is invited to attend the in-person event, while the YouTube live stream is open to general public.
